Artist

Living in mountains of the Darling Downs, Australia, Vicki Buttrose is a contemporary abstract painter whose practice explores the quiet power of the Australian bush and coastline. Drawing on a deep connection to nature and memory, her layered works reflect themes of stillness, light, and land as witness—blending the spiritual with the political in a contemporary, contemplative language of mark making and form.

Sanctum Remembered, 2025, 120 x 90 cm
In this charcoal and acrylic painting, I capture a fleeting moment of light filtering through the Australian bush—a pause where memory and presence intertwine. This work is a meditation on place, on land that holds stories older than us, and traces of what has been taken, lost, or simply faded. Using layered marks and muted tones, I evoke the quiet authority of the natural world and its enduring spirit. The painting reflects my ongoing exploration of the bush as both sanctuary and witness—a site of stillness, resistance, and deep-time connection that refuses to be forgotten, even in silence.

Waves, 2023  122 x 90 cm
This acrylic and charcoal painting captures the quiet drift of mangrove leaves across the sea’s surface—fragments of land meeting water. This work continues my exploration of the Australian bush and coastline, where memory and movement blur. Layers of luminous colour and fluid line trace nature’s slow rhythms, echoing a landscape in gentle, constant change.
